Coming down to eat some peanuts

We’ve adopted the squirrels that live on our street. I usually don’t feed wild animals, but we have a very popular bird feeder out back and we’ve been watching the squirrels since they came back. Seems that the crows were keeping the squirrels away. When the crows succumbed to west nile (we used to have hundreds, went down to literally zero, are back up to maybe a couple dozen), the squirrels came back.

They’re very cute and we’ve been feeding them peanuts (unsalted now so it’s healthier for them) at the base of our tree out front.

Squezal is the large female who comes the most often. She holds one paw up or out, though it doesn’t seem to be hurt. She’ll almost come up to me, but they are very cautious animals.

Next we’re going to add some sunflower seeds to their handout, see how they like that.

Oh, and we call them Chee-Chees, because that’s the sound they make.
